For tonight’s live match preview we drop down to The Championship for Leeds visit to Cardiff, which is live on Sky Sports.
There’s no love lost between the two teams, which dates back to 2002 when Cardiff dumped a high flying Leeds out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round. See highlights of that match. It was an ill tempered match that saw Alan Smith get sent off for Leeds and it very much set the tone for future encounters.
Stemming from the cup win Cardiff went 15 matches without defeat against Leeds and were very much a bogey side for them. However there’s been a bit of a roll reversal in the past couple of seasons, with Leeds winning 3 of the last 4 encounters, including the last 2 fixtures at the Cardiff City Stadium, both by a 2-0 scoreline.
Ex-Leeds manager, Neil Warnock, is now in charge at Cardiff and Leeds ex-captain Sol Bamba now plys his trade there at centre back, although it remains to be seen if he’ll be playing.
Both teams have started the season better than expected, with Leeds currently on top and Cardiff in 3rd on the same number of points. Cardiff have won 3 and drawn 1 of their home games, while Leeds have won 3 and lost 1 of their away matches. Leeds did come unstuck in their last Championship away game, at Millwall, but they bounced back to knock Premier League Burnley out of the League Cup.
For Leeds a lot will depend on whether Pontus Jansson is back fit. They’ve only conceded 1 goal this season, while he’s been playing, but he’s missed the last 2 games through injury.
With both teams playing so well, it’s a difficult one to call result wise, so instead, given the feisty nature of the fixture over the years, I’ve been looking at the bookings market with bet365. They’re offering 11/10 on their being over 4.5 cards in the match.
With yellow cards counting 1 point and reds counting 2 points that’ll be my fun bet for the game.
